Brookline is a vibrant town in Norfolk County along Boston’s eastern border. Despite its close proximity to Boston’s downtown area, Brookline has managed to maintain its own distinctive identity. The town offers a unique blend of urban and suburban residences, large apartment complexes, charming brownstones and sprawling estates. Much of Brookline can be accessed by the Green Line T, the Boston area’s public transportation system. Some of the most popular retail areas of Brookline include Coolidge Corner, Washington Square, Brookline Village, Cleveland Circle and the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. These retail hubs are home to delicious restaurants, movie theaters, boutiques and large department stores. Important to note is Brookline’s overnight on-street parking ban, making parking spaces a prized commodity when it comes to Brookline real estate.
As of the 2000 census report, there were 57,107 residents in the 6.8 square mile town of Brookline. The town is home to a wide range of people, including many academic and scientific professionals who work in the nearby medical centers and universities such as Beth Israel Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Longwood Medical Center, Boston College, Boston University, MIT and Harvard University. Brookline has kept its “town meeting” form of government and has adamantly refused absorption into the Boston city limits.
